This term’s topic is ‘Growing’ and for our sparkling start we tasted a variety of fruits with seeds inside them. We investigated and compared where in the world the fruits were grown and whether they grew on the ground or in a tree.  Some of the fruits were very juicy but all were very yummy!

In Maths we have been looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We looked in our classroom, library and outside in the playground and found other items that are also formed as 2D and 3D shapes.

We have also been counting numbers 1-20, looking at the ‘teen’ numbers and ‘1 more than’ and ‘1 less than’ for Year 1s and multiplication for Year 2s.

Recently in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) lesson we had a Robotics morning. Using different LEGO® materials known as MINDSTORMS® we built our robots working in groups of 3. We discussed and shared our ideas to make the structure of our robots stronger and more stable. A small laptop was connected to the robots and we were shown how to add the coding instructions to make a program that made the robot move forward and turn left or right if we placed our hand in front of the robots ‘eyes’.

We had lots of fun and enjoyed playing with the robots!

In ICT we have been using Purple Mash to access 2Paint-a-Picture software to create our own art based pictures based on different Art styles. So far we have looked at Impressionism and Pointillism, and used the program tools such as the palette and dilute colour to create our artwork.

Impressionism

This is a French artistic movement which began in 19th century Paris. The Impressionist artists used thin, small brush strokes in their paintings and painted ordinary, realistic settings.

Pointillism

Artist Georges Seurat was the developer of a very scientific way of painting known as pointillism. He used tiny dots of pure colour, side by side to build forms in his paintings.
