In Geography this week we have been looking at Asia, which is one of the seven continents of the World. By accessing Kiddle, an internet search engine, and looking through an Atlas we have seen for ourselves all the many types of fantastic facts and information about Asia. We have started to write about Asia in our Mini Fact Booklets.

In Maths we have been looking at different kinds of measurements, 2D and 3D shapes.

Using our hand spans we measured different items in our classroom and ourselves. We all stood in a line with the highest first and the shortest last, but then discovered that measuring in hand spans isn’t an accurate way to measure, as we are all different heights! The teacher showed us a metre stick and centimetres.

By using weighing scales we found out that different items can be heavier, lighter or equal in weight and we talked about grams and kilograms. We counted out 20 plastic cubes for one side of the scale and then investigated what would make the scale balance with some interesting discoveries.

 

 

2D shapes are flat shapes. They have sides and vertices.
A vertex is a point where two or more sides meet. The plural of vertex is vertices. The number of sides and vertices are the properties of a shape. Using the 2D shapes we were able to find out what their properties were and compare them.

3D Shapes are shapes that have three dimensions to them. These dimensions are width, height and depth. We can find 3D shapes all around us in our daily lives.

 

3D shapes have faces (sides), edges and vertices (corners). A face is a flat or curved surface on a 3D shape. For example a cube has six faces and a cylinder has three. An edge is where the two faces meet.
